Prologue

It had been a long, hard-fought battle between Excalibur and Black Air and the Hellfire Club, first in the skies over Excalibur's base on Muir Island, then at Black Air's North Yorkshire acquisition station, and finally in London, at the London Hellfire Club site and the Black Air headquarters building. The heroes of Excalibur unquestionably had both might and right on their side, but that did not keep them from going down in abject defeat, as their greater powers were unable to prevail against both the forces and magic of the London Hellfire Club and the practiced viciousness of Black Air's top mutant operatives Scratch, Shrine and Peter Wisdom. Most of the Hellfire Club's Inner Circle had been killed in the battle, but all of Excalibur had been captured or killed, and Black Air was left in control of the country's future unchallenged.
