Introduction

The Westchester mansion belonging to Charles Xavier was even more crowded than usual. Many of the X-men were present, X-Force was still in residence, and now a number of Excalibur had come over for a visit.

Moira MacTaggart had stayed behind to continue researching the Legacy virus, not wanting to take any time off away from her lab for this trip. They could easily transfer data electronically between her Muir Island research center and Westchester, and, while the time difference between New York and Scotland made conference calls occasionally inconvenient for one side or the other, she could continue to work while still remaining in contact with Professor Xavier and Hank McCoy. And she was looking forward to a brief period of peace and quiet, a welcome vacation from riding herd on the kindergarten Excalibur sometimes seemed.

Brian came to spend some time with his sister Betsy, and because Betsy wanted Warren and Brian to get to know each other better. Meggan came along with Brian as a matter of course, with a bubbly enthusiasm for the outing, looking forward to this brief exposure to new places, new people, new experiences, even though she knew she wouldn't really like living so near urban civilization and pollution for any period of time.

Rahne wanted to visit with Sunspot and Cannonball, and she'd had brought Douglock along to meet them and let them get acquainted with him, since they'd both started at the mansion as team-mates of hers and Doug Ramsey's in the New Mutants. Rahne and Tabitha had been teammates for a short time, also, but they weren't particularly close. Back then, BoomBoom had been jealous of Rictor's interest in Rahne, and right now Tabitha was insecure enough in her relationship with Sam that she didn't particularly want another girl around who had had a longer history with Sam, especially after Sunspot had primed her for the upcoming visit by telling her all about Rahne's crush on Sam when they first joined the New Mutants. Of course, Bobby had conveniently neglected to tell her that Rahne had had a crush on Bobby before Sam, and later on every other boy in the New Mutants in turn.

Nightcrawler had come to discuss developments in general with his old teammate and fellow teamleader Cyclops, and to get to know Iceman, Gambit and Bishop better. However, he knew he would end up spending most of the visit with Wolverine and Storm, his oldest and best friends on the team. Amanda had taken off on her own to check out some old haunts and old friends, leaving all his time free to visit with the X-men.

Kitty had brought Pete Wisdom to meet her old team, to get to know her friends and to let them meet him. She had worried a little whether he might feel out of place or unwelcome, but neither of them wanted to be apart for the several days planned for this visit, and she knew they'd have to get the introduction over with sooner or later. She just hoped that the people important to her would be able to get along, that she wouldn't be forced to choose.

And, of course, Colossus had come along also. His presence was still a bit awkward, after his apparent betrayal of Xavier and the X-men when he left to join Magneto after Illyana's funeral, and his refusal to stay with the X-men after their confrontation with Gene Nation. Moira, Kurt and the rest of Excalibur had managed to keep confidential the details of his attack on Wisdom, but a few rumors had leaked out, adding to an overall feeling of unease. But the X-men intended to make every effort to make Peter feel welcomed back to the fold, accepted back to his place among them.

It promised to be a very interesting visit, indeed.
