"Things get messed up sometimes," said Doug.

The Beast has Ororo, signed Doug.

"Did good," said Kitty.

"Yeah," said Doug.

For a minute he was silent, lost in thought.

"Kitty," he said. "Did you like skating?"

"I was the best," she said.

"But you never won any of the big prizes," said Doug.

"Best but not good enough," said Kitty.

"Why did you keep doing it?" said Doug.

"Dunno," said Kitty.

"Oh," said Doug.

He was lost in thought for a moment.

"Never mind," he said.

You didn't have to do what your mother never could, signed Doug.

"Why are you talking about her?" said Kitty.

"What?" said Doug, looking panicked. "I didn't say-"

"This has NOTHING to do with my Mother!" Kitty shrieked. "Nothing!"

"No, no, no, no, it has nothing to do with her!" said Doug. "Please put
me down, Kitty, I can't heal like you do if you hurt me."

"Nothing," said Kitty. "I live."

"Yes, you do," said Doug.

For now, he signed, but she did not see it.
