		and Neil Gaiman's SANDMAN........

My name is Fujii Yakumo.  Up until about a year ago, I was a normal
teenager...up until I met a girl who knew my father, Pai, who was a legendary
Sanjiiyan.  Well, everything was OK, until a....friend from her cane
accidentally killed me, and Pai took my soul, making me her Uu.  The only way
we could both become human was to find the Statue of Humanity.  

There are good and bad sides to this.  If I die, I can come back.....but only
while Pai lives.  And right now, I'm not sure if she lives.  After that fight
with Benares.....

Well, it's obvious she's still alive, because I am as well....but she's missing
now, and I've set upon a quest to look for her......


That was a long time ago, however, and I'm starting to lose faith.

Maybe she really is dead, and I will walk the Earth forever.

I had considered giving up.  However, a dream I had the night I was to make my 
decision changed that.....

You see, I fell asleep, and I was dreaming almost immediately.  In the dream, I
opened my eyes, to see two figures.  They were both dressed in black, had
jet-black hair, and were paler than anyone I'd ever seen.  The female one
looked more like a goth-punk than anything (complete with ankh!), and looked
somewhat...familiar.  The male one looked more like a vampire, with only black
pools for eyes.

"Fujii Yakumo?" the male one said.

"Y-Yes?" I hesitantly replied, wondering if some of Pai's enemies had followed
me all this time.

"My sister and I have been watching you for some time, and we are most
displeased with you with the events of the past four nights."

"W-what do you mean?"

"What ol' stuffy here is trying to say," said the female, "is that you better
not be quittin' now!"

"Quitting?"

"Yeah!  Look, kid, you better find her!"

When she said "her," I assumed she meant Pai, but I didn't know why...

"Why should I?"

"Because she cheated me with you, and I got some words with her!"

"What the Hell are you--"

"You mean you don't remember?"

"Remember what?" I asked, trying to pry whatever info I could about why she
knew so much about Pai...

"OK, look--you remember when that...harpy-thingy had you in his clutches??"

"Of course, you silly bit-"

"Well, don't you remember seeing someone for a brief moment?"

I thought, and that's when I realized...

"No! You're not...."

"The one and only."

"WHy are you here, now, if you can't take me???????"

"Like I said, if you don't find Pai, then I don't take you...ever!  And
besides, I got a few words to say to her anyway..."

I noticed that the male one was still over where he was, looking about as
solemn as Pai as the full Sanjiiyan.  I leaned over to Lady Death, and
whispered:

"SO why is the stiff here?"

"Oh, him?  Well, you know how you've been thinking about giving up?"

"Uhhh, yeah," I said, playing along.

"Well, y'see, my little brother here is what you'd call the Dream-king...in
short, he's Dream."

"Ahhhhh..."

DReam finally spoke again, in a solemn voice-

"My sister...called in a favor.  Fujii Yakumo, look at me."

I did, not knowing what else to do.

"You have lost hope of finding the Sanjiiyan Pai.  I now give it back to you. 
If you ever care to live like a mortal, you will find her."

I stood there, mesmerized...

"When you wake, your hopes will be renewed, and you will begin again in
earnest.  Sleep well, Fujii Yakumo...."

Dream disappeared before my eyes, but Death hesitated.

"Oh, yeah, Yakumo?"

"Yes?"

"Hope to see you again.....soon..."

She disappeared, and I awoke.

And I started out again, knowing I could find Pai.....

After all, I had hope.....
