To Live by the Sword part 05 "So Ambassador Gentry, why did you insist in following Kitty to the mansion?" Xavier asked the Ambassador. "I am not an elected official, Mister Xavier." He started. "I was appointed for life. As such, I don't have to cater to the people in my country. I am free to act as I see fit. I believe as you do, That mutant and human can work together." He paused to let that sink in. "I have been in office for some time now. Plus I have been watching you for some time. I know that you are more than slightly involved with the X-men. I might need their help in the near future." Again he paused. This time he waited for something. Xavier felt he needed to do a gentle scan of the Ambassador. Almost immediately Ambassador Gentry reached up to scratched his right ear. "I knew I chose correctly." He said as he turned to the silent man standing behind him. "You owe me a five pound note." "Allow me to introduce Eric Masterson, of the translator pool." The young man nodded gently. "We are both mutants as well." "I'm sorry." Xavier said hoping that he could save the situation. "I'm a sensitive, able to sense when I'm being scanned. You see, I get an itch, behind my right ear, only time it happens." "Okay, I'll admit to being a mutant. But what gave me away?" "As I said I have been in office for some time. During that time I came to the conclusion from a number of references to your so-called school. One, Hank McCoy attended here for a while, and he served on the Avengers, the record of his being an Avenger would normally be hidden, but he never publicly hid his true name. Also, your school filed its charter only a short time before the first appearance of the X-men, with a total student body always equal to the current roster of the X-men. All of those documents are available buried somewhere in the public record." Xavier started to look slightly pale at the thought that he might have been exposed because of a few simple mistakes, he began to feel as if his entire disguise was comprised of a pair of glasses and a change of clothes. "Don't worry, we're not here to expose you. Like I said, I need your help." "How can we be of service." Xavier replied starting to calm down. "Recently a number of rumors have started to surface in London about a group of mutants living underneath the city. As a result of these rumors a 'hate group' similar to some of the ones you have had here in the states was formed. They are responsible of a number of attacks on the less fortunate mutants in London. I was hoping that you could come and talk to parliament and perhaps have your X-men work with our Excalibur to try to find out if they are malcontents of if they are closer in needs of your own Morlock population." "Right now I need to see to the needs of my returned student. Afterwards I will come with a few of my X-men to see what we can do. Until then please speak to Excalibur about looking into the needs of your Morlock population." Xavier sat back at ease that he was clear of most troubles this situation was going to bring. Then he remembered something. "You mentioned something about both of you being mutants. Might I inquire something about your powers Mr. Masterson?" "I'm a translator, able to understand any language that I here personally and when I speak people that hear me will here it in a language that they are comfortable with." "I thought that the UN frowned on hiring mutants?" "I'm only called in when the normal translator is unavailable. Then they come running for my services." "So why are you here today? The Ambassador speaks English?" "I'm off duty, and there was the small mater of a bet." He said as he fished out a five note. "How many others do you know of that suspect that I am a mutant." "Two, maybe three. Both mutants themselves." The Ambassador replied. Xavier looked out the window and wondered what he should do about closing the hole in his cover. "How are we going to keep in-touch while you are in country. Obviously you can't keep coming to the mansion every few days?" "That is where Mr. Masterson comes in handy. I could see to it that he is allowed to farther his schooling here for a couple of semesters. Our friendship is well known, it would not be unlikely that I would call him on a regular basis." "You seem to have thought this out." Xavier said. "What if I said no." "Think of those mutants. If the attacks are not stopped then how long until someone is killed. We need you and your X-men. They have always been seen as a beacon of hope for mutants and in the UK they are often held as heroes to everyone. They are needed, if only for a short time." "How long until you can arrange for me to speak to Parliament?" "Around two or three months." "Don't worry, I'll stay in my room." Eric Masterson added. "I wish that this came at a more opportune time. But if we must do this I suppose that we can see to a room somewhere."
