Summary.  Don't want to give too much away but Angel has a plan and Spike is the centre of it!

It had been a long couple of weeks, Angel and Spike returned after a hard night.  They had closed down a brothel with Faith and Layla that night, but had only found a few minions; they were getting no closer to finding the head of the clan or his lieutenants.  They were still a threat, and had stepped up operations.

Layla and Faith had gone to bed as soon as they returned, while the vampires sat in the entertainment lounge, Spike had wanted to unwind.  Angel had wanted to talk; he had been trying to open up with Spike, and was taking the opportunity to try and relax in the other vampires company.

"Spike?" Angel asked, after Spike had put some music on. The walls were thick and the music did not carry.  Spike turned with a wary look on his face as Angel continued. "Have you had any relationships since you were in LA?"

"Course I have.  I'm not a eunuch like you!"  exclaimed Spike, he looked irritated.

"What happened?  You're not seeing anyone now?" Angel was determined to find out more, and get a better understanding about what had been going on in the younger vampire's life.

"Not that easy. Demons are not keen on going out with a demon hunter who kills them for a living, and humans don't last long.  Not that it's any concern of yours."  Spike sat in the reclining chair, and stretched out, looking bored.

"Why do the humans not last long, do they die?" Angel was determined to find out more.

"No, it's a lot for a human to give up to be with a vampire boy-friend," Spike continued, "I mean, I don't get older, can't have children and the daylight issues.  Guess I'm not long-term material.  Even if I find someone willing to take all that on, they object to the work, the danger I put myself in."

"Sounds like you have experience of the problems.  Was any woman or man since we are vampires after all, willing to take you on?"  Angel doggedly carried on, despite Spike's reluctance to speak, which was unlike the verbal onslaught he usually enjoyed.

"One woman was willing to try, give up having children, whole package.  She demanded that if she would do that for me, then I should give up Mavericks, that it was too dangerous," Spike sighed.

"Guess that didn't happen then," Angel smiled in, he hoped, an understanding way.

Spike got up, and crossed the room, "Look I'm tired, I don't want to talk about this right now.  Going to have a bath and go to bed.  Need to get the dust off my skin."

Angel nodded and changed the music, something relaxing and classical he thought, flicking through the disks, then picked up the MP3 player.  He was not good with computers, but Delilah had found some nice tracks for him, nothing too heavy. "Night on Bare Mountain" played. That would be perfect; he settled back in the chair and got ready to unwind.

His mind drifted back to the past, when his little vampire family were together.  He was Angelus the nominal head of the family, but really Darla was the one who called the shots.  She had controlled him and kept him in line, while Drusilla kept her dark knight beside her, Darla would not let anything get between Angelus and herself, or at least anyone who might be a threat.  The young fledgling William had been a threat and she had watched them closely.

She was willing for him to train and hunt with the boy, and Angelus was eager to train him.  Both he and Darla agreed it was good for Drusilla to have the distraction, but she needed someone who was strong enough to look after her, and it gave Darla and himself more freedom.  He also enjoyed having another male to hunt with, and the ease with which the prey fell for them was amusing.  In part down to their looks and charm, when the wanted to be charming they were very good at it.

While Angelus had no problems admitting he was attracted to other men, and William was a very attractive man, Darla was not going to allow him to get involved in a relationship with another man.  With her experience in bed and good looks she was not threatened by another woman, but felt threatened by Angelus finding a male vampire, and made sure she was aware of any overtures in that direction, quickly putting a stop to it.

She would not go to the Masters court, having recognised William's talent, and Angelus's reaction to him.  She did not want to endanger her position in the hierarchy of the court, and position as the Master's favourite.  Within the close knit family ties that the Aurelius bloodline had, it was possible the Master might try to claim the young fledgling for himself.  This she would not permit, and so the boy was never presented to court.  This suited Angelus well, not wishing to lose contact with the boy, and not having a very good relationship with the old Master, who had never forgiven him for taking Darla away from his side.  The only problem was Darla's close observation of his dealings with the young Will.

The time never seemed right to make a move.  Drusilla guarded her childe closely as well.  She may have been insane but she was not unaware, especially with her sight, and had commented more than once that the animals would sing to her if he tried anything with her champion.  It was far from ideal for any chance to make a move on Will, both female vampires stood in the way, and they were formidable, as well as being both their sires.  Angelus had bided his time.

Then he had been cursed with his soul, and disowned before he could make a move on the alluring boy.  With the soul and the harnessing of the demon, any attraction to men had been pushed away.  His strict Catholic upbringing  could not  acknowledge such desire and made him feel like a deviant.  This confliction within was one of the reasons he had treated Spike, as he was then, badly.  At every turn he had pushed the younger vampire away, even when Angelus returned he could not bring himself to acknowledger his feelings and attraction, instead taking the unfaithful Drusilla away, she was not the most loyal and it was easily done by her daddy.

Angel got up, the thoughts were upsetting, and the past was making the present more difficult for him.  With his new found completeness with soul and demon he found it easier to acknowledge these feelings, but difficult to do anything about them.  While he had been able to be with Spike in a way, and working with him, training with him helped, Spike was not responsive to any attempts at friendship yet.  He still tried to have the usual verbal sparring sessions with him.  While they both enjoyed training in fighting techniques the training in discipline wasn't progressing as quickly as Angel would like.  He had moved onto demon techniques now, which Spike was more responsive to, the human ones were designed for the soul not taming the demon and the excitable vampire did indeed seem more relaxed, and disciplined  since adopting the new regime.

Angel still had the problem of telling Spike that he had taken sireship from Drusilla, it was one of the reasons he had tracked her down.  It has taken a week, and left them both weak for a few days.  It was not am episode he wished to dwell on, but new he would have to explain to Spike.  At present the time was never right to do so.  He had told the truth about the family, Drusilla was indeed draining them for their own good, but they had both needed the protection of the family as well.  They were well versed in magic and could offer to look after them, while the human blood on offer, without endangering anyone, strengthened both vampires.  In his research he had found out about this condition, it was thought they were almost a reaction to the threat of vampires, and a natural symbiotic relationship could exist.  What he had not said was that he had gone looking for such a family so he could go through the rite.  He had needed the fresh blood from a human, and this had been the only way to allow him that resource.

To strengthen the bond he hoped to forge with Spike he had to be his sire, and he was hoping his relationship with the seducer would develop.  His plans were to have Spike fall for him and enter into a relationship with him, maybe bring out the softer Will side, but only for him.  He'd jealously guard that side for himself; perhaps Will would even write a love poem for him.  He dreamed of waking up one morning after loving his boy, and finding a poem on the pillow beside him.  It was a romantic notion, but he often smiled at the thought.  In his wilder fantasies Will would write and sing a song for him, maybe even take up a musical instrument.  Then he would remember the type of music his boy favoured and shudder.

In even more wilder stretches of his imagination they were mated.  Partnered for eternity together, both faithful and loving, only interested in each other.  The new look Spike had adopted now helped. He saw shades of Will in his hair and clothing, a softer side.  It seemed Spike no longer felt he had to project the Big Bad image in everything anymore, and could be softer around his humans.  If only he could encourage him to be softer around him, let down his defences, and trust him.  The hurdles of their past would take time to overcome, but he was encouraged by some positive signs.  Spike was responding to his training, and the verbal sparring seemed less intense.  He was pleased that Spike had even let him touch him in a friendly way a few times, and his eyes seemed softer when he looked at him.  No longer hard and unfriendly, but still wary .

Things were progressing he was sure.  He knew it would not happen overnight, but his overtures of friendship were not slapped away out of hand anymore.  It was something to work on.
