Telling the Family

By Marie Nomad

It was a tricky situation. He went by scenario after scenario and he still wasn't sure what will happen. Scott frowned as he looked over the papers. Emma was still in her first trimester but according to Hank, the baby's brain will start developing soon and Rachel and even Nathan could sense it if the baby has some form of telepathic powers. He has to tell soon since Emma can't be allowed to fight in the front lines the next time there's a threat. No one knows the side effects of a telepath having a baby, not even Hank.

Thanks to the hectic lives of his teammates, gathering them all in one place became next to impossible unless a major supervillian decides to attack. Emma and Scott decided on a public announcement after telling everyone vital one-on-one. He decided to tell the most important person first.

Scott cleared his throat and said, "I know you probably heard this but Emma is pregnant with my baby." He looked at the stone bird statue half expecting lightning to fall from the sky or it to lit up in anger. But, it just stood there. "Wherever you are, please watch over the baby." He prayed and then he went inside. He felt a little better. Now, he had tell the living which would be slightly less forgiving.

Scott walked down the hallway to see Logan there. Logan was rarely at the school thanks to his duties abroad and with the Avengers. He better tell him before he disappeared for some unknown reason for who knows how long. "Logan, there's something I have to tell you. Emma's pregnant with my baby."

The Canadian shrugged. "I know."

"You... know?!"

"Why do you think I stopped smoking around her? She smells pregnant."

"Oh." Scott paused. "Did you tell anyone else?"

"Nah, figured it was your mess, you have to tell it."

"Thanks. I didn't know women can smell pregnant."

"Oh yeah."

"How do you think the others would react?"

"I don't know but you better tell soon before the rumor mill spreads this news." Logan walked off.

"Right."

Scott checked off his mental list. He saw Nathan fighting in the Danger Room with the safeties off. He pondered telling his son and then decided that he looked too busy and telling the news now might endanger his life. "I'll tell him later."

Emma strolled into the study room where her students are studying. Unlike Scott, she didn't have any family to tell. She killed one of her sisters, the other one was missing, her father was dead, her mother was in a nursing home, and her brother had forgotten that she exists. Emma sighed. And people say that Scott's family was strange. Hers was just as dysfunctional. She frowned as she put her hand on her stomach. What kind of child would grow up with families as dysfunctional as the Frosts and the Summers? The poor child would be targeted by at least one of her aunts or uncles in her lifetime. She shook her head. She should not be thinking of the future like this.

She walked up to the Stepford Cuckoos and said, "Girls, guess what, I'm pregnant."

The three looked up. "We know. You had been thinking about it constantly." They said at once.

Emma frowned. "It's impossible to keep a secret around this place. Does anyone else knows?"

"Only Mr. Logan knows."

"Good. Don't tell anyone else until the others know."

"Yes, Ma'am."

Emma paled as she ran out to the nearest bathroom. The sisters smirked at each other and Phoebe asked, "Want to see if we can get the entire school to know before lunch?"

Scott's hands sweat as he tapped at the communications relay. Right now, most of his family was out there in space, the people he really need to tell. His brother, his daughter, his father by blood and father by love are out there in space. He had to tell them, especially Rachel.

The screen turned on to reveal Alex being covered in green goo fighting something off screen. "Back! Shoo! Hi, Bro." Alex blasted the something with his plasma blasts. "What's up?"

"I see that you're busy, I'll call back later." Scott said as he put his hand on the button.

"Nah, just some pest control. Some kind of evil globs that grow after they eat. Kinda like tribbles but gross." Alex took a deep breath. "We should be fine for now. So, what's the reason for the call? Is Emma making trouble again?"

"Not really..." Scott rubbed his head. "I don't know how to tell you but... I'm going to have a baby."

Alex's eyes widened. "No... how long?"

"Several weeks." Scott replied. "It was a shock to me too."

"I can't wait to see you at nine months. My brother, the first man to give birth to a baby!"

"What! No! Emma's pregnant."

"I know." Alex chuckled and then blasted again. He paused. "This is kinda bad. A baby right now..."

"I know. We are going to prepare for the baby and increase security around here. I don't want to say too much over the monitor."

"Oh yeah sure..." Alex went off out of the range of the monitor and yelled, "GUYS! EMMA'S PREGNANT WITH SCOTT'S BABY!"

Other than the squealing and squelching of the pests, there was silence. Finally, there were the sounds of people trampling over each other. Rachel flew over the crowd and Rachel asked, "Really?! Is it going to be a boy or a girl?"

"Emma thinks its going to be a girl but we're just waiting." Scott paused. "Rachel, if the baby is a girl, her name will be Megan. Emma's very insistent on that name. She didn't want the baby to feel like she is in your shadow."

Rachel's smile faltered. "No... that's okay. I'm Jean's daughter not Emma's. At least I'll have a little baby brother or sister. Does Kitty know yet?"

"No."

"You better tell her soon. What about Nate?"

"Not him yet. I just thought you should know first."

"Thanks, Dad." Rachel pulled herself away. Her stomach was in knots. On one hand, she was estatic to have a baby brother or sister but on the other hand, she knew that it's not some alternate version of herself. She wanted a baby version of her to be born to help her find her place in this timeline but that's not possible with Jean being dead or away or whatever she is.

"Is it true?" Corsair asked as he came up with Charles. "I'm having another grandbaby?"

"Yeah, it's true." Scott said as he slightly smiled at his father's joyous tone.

"All right, another grandkid, one that I can bounce on my knee and spoil him rotten." Corsair sighed.

"What about Nate and me?" Rachel asked in a hurtful tone.

"Oh, Ray, I love you but I can't bounce you on my knee without getting some weird looks from my crew. And Nathan is larger than me. I can't spoil the two of you... unless I get that shipment of Kiligah armory for Nate." Corsair pondered.

"I'm glad you approve of this, Dad." Scott said, "This baby is really... unexpected. The others might not take it so well."

"I'm not a stellar father myself. I missed both your wedding and your funeral. Emma seems like a nice lady... not like Jean but if she can make you happy, so be it!" Corsair paused. "If you need anything, let me know. Okay?"

"I will."

Charles spoke up. "Scott... I don't know what to say."

"We were both using protection, sir." Scott can't help but fidget. Despite the fact that the professor was light years away and didn't have his telepathy, just looking at him make Scott feel like an awkward teenager getting caught in something very messy. "It just happened. Emma and I don't really want the baby because it is a liability but we can't do an abortion and adoption is impossible to think of with the baby's possible powers. We're making the arrangements to raise the baby in a nice safe environment."

"How are the other X-Men reacting to this?" Charles was stunned and disappointed. How can Scott and Emma have a baby right now? Their relationship alone was causing tension in the team. The baby would just add on to the angst. If it was Scott and Jean's baby, that would be an entirely different situation.

"Hank and Logan seem to be okay with it. I didn't have a chance to talk to the others yet." Scott winced at the thought of having to tell the others, especially Kitty. "I don't want what happened to Nathan to happen to the baby."

Charles pushed away his negative thoughts. Even without his telepathy, he could see how much Scott was struggling with his burden. "It won't. You have more people to help you and they would understand, eventually."

"Thank you, sir." Scott sighed. "I better go and tell the others. Good luck." He hung up and mentally checked off his list.

As Emma suspected, the gossip flew faster than Northstar about her impending pregnancy. By her second class, the students were talking about names and powers. Nothing spreads faster than juicy gossip. Emma did her best to keep a good handle on the situation but it was next to impossible with the young mutants. It also didn't help that she had to run out of the classroom at least once to throw up.

Emma wiped her mouth as she marched from the bathroom. It was recess and her lunch didn't want to stay down. She nearly walked into a near mountain of a man. She glanced up to see Cable standing there. "Nathan, finished with that danger room workout already?"

"Yes. Are you really pregnant?"

Emma's heart pounded. She and Nathan never really talked. She was losing her mind and Nathan was busy fighting the Apocalypse again. They had an interesting history which she hoped Scott would never have to hear. "Yes, do you have a problem with that?"

"Not at all." The time traveler shrugged. "We need all the babies we can get. Congratulations."

Emma couldn't sense any anger or hostility from the large mutant. True, he is an experienced telepath but he didn't seem angry at all. "Thank you."

Nathan nodded and walked away. Emma blinked as she tried to think of what happened.

Scott could tell that Emma's news is spreading fast. He nearly cursed himself for not telling his teammates sooner. There were signs. One sign was a message board filled with suggestions of names for the baby. The other was students congratulating him for the baby. The final sign was when there was a news report on Entertainment Live about Emma's pregnancy. Scott really have to tell the others soon before the reporters come. He saw Kitty sitting in a chair staring at him.

"I guess you heard."

"Yeah, I did. You jerk! How could you?! The baby shouldn't be born. She should be..."

"Rachel. I know. I told her already." Scott tensed up. "Emma and I can't help it. We did everything we could to try to prevent this from happening but it happened. We have to live with it. I don't want you to love the baby but don't hate her. We need all the help we can."

"I know. I know." Kitty pouted. "I just... don't expect me to babysit!" She got up and marched through the wall.

Scott ran his hand through his hair. Kitty and Emma are not getting along at all. He was hoping that she would take it better but he was wrong.

He came up to the Lobby where he heard an intense conversation. "A baby. She is having a baby." Sam muttered. "Ah never thought that she and he would..."

"So, Emma's pregnant. I don't see the big flonqing deal." Nathan shrugged.

Scott's eyebrows rose over his visor. Nathan knew and he didn't care?! He quickly made a mental note to have him tested for possession or to see if he really was Nate.

"You seem pretty calm about this, sugah." Rogue said as she walked and then tapped on his head. "Are you really Nate?"

"Yes, and why shouldn't I be calm about this. True, the baby is going to be a liability for the first few years but we need every new mutant we can get." Nathan drank some more coffee. Silence filled the room again.

"Wow..." Paige muttered.

"By the way, does anyone know who the father is?" Nathan asked curiously.

At once, everyone who was eating ended up choking and Scott's jaw dropped. "Oh come on!" Rogue exclaimed, "Don't tell me you don't know!"

"Not really, who Emma dates is none of my business."

"Err..." Sam cleared his throat. "Please, tell me that you are joking."

"I don't joke." Nathan muttered.

Scott rubbed his head in confusion. How could he not notice? True, he and Nathan barely spoke to each other despite him being back in the X-Men but the signs are up. It wasn't like he and Emma were hiding anything from anyone.

"Nathan..." Scott said as he walked into the lobby. The other X-Men suddenly walked to the other side of the room. "I am the father."

Nathan blinked as the information soaked into his brain. "WHAT?!" His eye glowed as he slammed his fist into the table. "You and Emma... are having a baby?! You weren't even dating!"

"Yes we are. We thought you knew."

Nathan looked down. "No. No one told me anything."

"Didn't you hear anything from the students about our relationship?"

"Kids always gossip about teachers romancing each other."

"What about the newspapers talking about us?"

"I don't trust newspapers."

"The Daily Show's segment about my affair with Emma?"

"I don't trust television."

"What about the fact that Emma and I shared a room?"

"I thought that lingerie belonged to Jean."

Scott sat down dumbfounded. He had never heard of such a strong case of denial before. "I don't believe this. You really didn't know?"

"No. No one told me. I was wondering why everyone was keeping their distance away from me and why they were watching me so closely." Nathan stared at Scott in a strange lost way. "Why Emma?"

"It's hard to explain. I love her, I really do." Scott said as he put his hand on Nathan's knee.

"Yes, but it's Emma Frost. She's cold, cunning, and she wasn't really that good at sex!"

"I know what you think but she is..." Scott stopped. "What do you mean she's not that good at sex?" Now, he remembered why having a time traveling son who was technically younger and older than you was a bad idea.

"It was a one night stand. It was years ago." Nathan waved away. "How could you betray Redd like this?" Nathan put his head on the table.

"I'm sorry, I really am but Jean is dead right now." Scott was still trying to digest the fact that Nathan and Emma had some kind of relationship.

"I..." Nathan got up. "I need to get a drink." He announced as he stood up and walked away.

A few hours later...

Nathan laid his head on the table surrounded by bottles of whiskey, scotch, and other fine products.

"Is this the Summers' way of dealing with romance crap? Get drunk?" Logan said as he finished his bottle of whiskey. After many years of dealing with the Summers soap opera, he saw a pattern. When Scott lost Jean the first time, he got drunk. When Alex lost Madelyne and Lorna, he got drunk. When Scott was caught in the affair with Emma by Jean, Scott got drunk.

"Works with me." Nathan muttered. "Oath. Of all the strippers in the world, why did Slymm get with her?"

"Emma's not a stripper any more, Nate."

"I know. I know. I thought he would wait for her." Nathan muttered.

"Jean won't come back. We both know it. You should see her, she's a goddess. Her place is in the stars now." Logan sighed as he lit up a cigar.

"It doesn't feel right. It just feels like that there's some nutcase out there pulling the strings on our lives. Just when things are starting to go right, this nutcase makes things screwed up. Jean should be alive carrying Rachel not... Emma."

Logan scoffed. "You are taking this harder than when you found out Apocalypse came back from the dead. Have no idea how that happened."

Nathan shrugged. "The mutants need someone like Apocalypse to fight against. Besides, he's not interested in eradicating mutants."

"Yes, just humans." Logan stared at him. "Your family is getting more screwed up all the time so I won't bother asking about it. I'm just saying is that in nine months, there will be a little baby whose only crime is that she is born. Don't put anything against her."

"I know that, Runt. That time in the Avengers swelled your head." Nathan muttered, "And I need more drink."

"So, did you survive your mission?" Emma asked as she lounged in her silky lingerie. In a few months, she won't be able to wear such things so she was taking advantage of them now. As good as she looks, not even she could make her lingerie fit when she has a beach ball for a stomach.

"Mostly. Everyone knows and they seem to be taking it pretty well." Scott said as he slipped beside her. "Nathan didn't know that we were dating."

"I never heard of such a strong case of denial." Emma rolled her eyes. "He better learn to accept us or I will spank him."

"Emma, he's a forty something year old man." Scott laughed at the image of Emma with Nathan across her knee with a huge paddle in her hand. Then he asked, "Did you and Nathan really have a relationship together?"

Emma frowned. She really didn't want Scott to know about this but she had done worse in her life. It was just a little embarrassing given this situation. "It was a one-night stand. He was a lonely horny mercenary and I was a stripper. I tried to trick him into giving me money and he caught me. We ended up in a hotel room naked and embarrassed. He paid me extra and we agreed never to speak about it again." Emma looked at Scott's shocked face. "It was long before I even met you and I have no feelings for your son either."

Scott held her close. "Good. My life is complicated enough already. It's really happening. We are going to have a baby."

"No, I'm having the baby; you are just going to watch." Emma corrected. A sneaky smile crept upon her lips. "Unless..."

"What is it?"

"Oh nothing." Emma laid back. Perhaps, she can enjoy having this baby yet.

The End?
