Kindred (Vampires)

Common Words
Anarch a Kindred rebel, one who does not respect Elders.

Barrens, The areas of a city devoid of life.

Becoming, The when you join the ranks of the Kindred.

Book of Nod, The the sacred history of the Kindred. Incomplete.

Beast, The the urges and drives which turn a vampire into a monster.

Blood that which makes a vampire a vampire.

Blood Kindred the relationship between vampires of the same lineage and clan.

Blood Oath The receiving of blood in an acknowledgement of mastery. Grants a mystical dominance to the giver.

Brood a group of vampires around a leader (usually their sire).

Caitiff a vampire with no clan. Derogatory.

Camarilla, The a global sect of vampires.

Childe a young or foolish vampire. Derogatory.

Clan a group of vampires who share mystic and physical characteristics.

Diablerie consuming the blood of another vampire.

Domain the fiefdom of a vampire, usually a Prince.

Elder a vampire who is 300 years or more old.

Elysium a place where Elders gather, usually places of high culture.

Embrace, The the act of transforming a mortal into a vampire, by draining their blood and replacing it with a small amount of the vampire's own blood.

Fledgling a newly created vampire.

Generation the number of steps between a vampire and the mythical Caine.

Gehenna the impending Armageddon when the Antediluvians shall arise and devour all vampires.

Ghoul a servant created by allowing a mortal to drink vampire blood.

Haven the home of a vampire during daylight.

Hunger, The the drive to feed. Far more intense than that of mortals.

Inconnu a sect of vampires, usually Methuselahs, who have removed themselves from the Jyhad.

Jyhad, The the secret war being fought between the surviving third generation vampires, using younger vampires as their pawns.

Kindred a vampire. Elders prefer the more poetic Cainite.

Kiss to take blood, usually that of a mortal.

Lupine a werewolf, the enemy of the vampire.

Lush a vampire who drinks from drink or drug addicts.

Life, The mortal blood taken as sustenance.

Man, The the element of humanity in a vampire, which strives against the Beast.

Masquerade, The the effort to hide vampires from the mortal world, mainly in the aftermath of the Inquisition.

Prince the ruler of a city. Male or female.

Riddle, The the central dilemma of a vampire's existence - to prevent atrocities, the

Vampire must commit atrocities. Monsters we are lest monsters webecome.

Rogue a vampire who feeds on other vampires.

Sabbat, The a sect opposed to the Camarilla, they revel in bloodlust and cruelty.

Sect the three primary groups - the Camarilla, the Sabbat and the Inconnu.

Sire the parent-creator of a vampire.

Vessel a potential or past source of blood, usually a human.

Old Form (used by Elders and those wanting to appear sophisticated)
Amaranth drinking the blood of another vampire

Ancilla an adolescent vampire - beyond neonate, but not yet elder.

Antediluvian a vampire of the Third Generation - VERY powerful!

Archon a powerful vampire serving a Justicar.

Autarkis a vampire who refuses to be part of Kindred society, and does not recognise the domain of a Prince.

Cainite a vampire.

Canaille the mortal herd.

Cauchemar a vampire who feeds on sleeping victims and prevents their awakening.

Cunctator a vampire who avoids killing by drinking slowly and shallowly.

Coterie a group of vampires who protect and support one another against Outsiders.

Consanguineous of the same lineage.

Footpad one who feeds off derelicts and the homeless.

Gentry a vampire who haunts nightclubs and other places where mortals go to pair off.

Golconda a vampiric Nirvana, where all urges are balanced, and the slide into bestiality is halted.

Humanitas the vampire's degree of humanity.

Kine humans. Contemptuous.

Leech a human who drinks vampire blood, yet retains free will.

Lextalionis the vampire's code of justice - an eye for an eye.....

Lineage a vampire's bloodline.

Methuselah a vampire who no longer lives amongst others. Usually Fourth Generation.

Neonate a young, newly-created vampire.

Osiris a vampire who surrounds himself with ghouls and followers to ensure his sustenance.

Papillon the red-light district.

Progeny all the vampires created by one Sire.

Praxis the right of Princes to rule, and the laws and customs enforced by a specific Prince.

Primogen the ruling council in a city.

Regnant one with a Blood Bond over another vampire.

Retainers human or ghoul servants.

Siren a vampire who puts victims to sleep and only takes a little blood.

Suspire the dream dance during the final stages of the quest for Golconda.

Third Mortal Caine.

Thrall a vampire under a Blood Bond, and thus under another vampire's Control.

Vitae blood.

Wassail when the last vestiges of humanity are lost.

Whelp a young vampire. Contemptuous.

Wight human, ghoul.

Witch-hunter a human vampire-hunter.

Whig a vampire with an obsessive interest in mortal fashions and events.
 

Vulgar Argot (used by young vampires)
 
Alleycat a homeless vampire, or one who feeds on the homeless.

Banking taking blood from blood banks.

Banker a vampire who engages in Banking.

Black Hand a sect which practises diablerie.

Blister a vampire who carries an infectious disease.

Bloodline the vampire's heritage.

Blood Bond the servitude caused by the Blood Oath.

Blood Doll a vampire held in Regnant by another vampire.

Butterfly one who mingles with the rich and famous, and feeds only on them.

Casanova one who seduces mortals to feed on them, but doesn't kill them.

Change, The becoming a vampire.

Damned, The the vampire race.

Donor a potential or past source of blood.

Farmer a vampire who feeds on non-human blood.

Fief sarcastic term for the domain of a Prince or clan.

Head a vampire who feeds on those on drugs, to feel the effect.

Headhunter an elder who hunts other vampires for blood.

Lick a vampire.

Rack, The a hunting ground consisting of nightclubs and the like.

Rake one who habitually uses the Rack.

Sandman a vampire who feeds only on sleeping victims.

Slumming feeding from the homeless and derelicts.

Stalker a mortal who hunts the Kindred.

Tease a female Casanova.

Turf a vampire's home ground.

Vegetary a vampire who feeds on animals.
 

Garou (Werewolves)
Common Parlance
Anchorhead a spirit gate between the Near and Deep Umbras.

Apocalypse the age of destruction. The time of the final battle with the Wyrm.

Auspice the phase of the moon under which a Garou was born. They are

Ragabash (New Moon, Trickster); Theurge (Crescent Moon, Seer);

Philodox (Half Moon, Judge); Galliard (Gibbous Moon, Moon Dancer;

Ahroun (Full Moon, Warrior).

Bane evil spirits which follow the Wyrm.

Bawn a boundary area around a caern, where mortals are watched.

Blight a corrupted area of the spirit or physical world.

Breed the ancestry of a Garou - wolf, human, or other Garou.

Caern a sacred place, where Garou can contact the spirit world.

Celestine the greatest spirits e.g. Luna (the Moon), and Helios (the Sun).

Concolation a great Moot.

Concord, The the agreement, 9000 years ago, to end the Impergium.

Corruption the act of destroying or debasing life.

Crinos the half-wolf, half-human battle form of the Garou.

Deep Umbra the aspects of the Umbra which lie beyond the Membrane.

Delirium madness suffered by humans who see a Crinos-form Garou.

Domain a mini-realm in the Umbra.

Feral slang term for lupus.

Gaffling a simple spirit servant of a Celestine, Jaggling or Incarna.

Gaia the Earth and related realms, both physical and spiritual. The Earth Mother.

Garou the term werewolves use for themselves.

Gauntlet the barrier between the physical world and the spiritual, strongest around technological areas, weakest around caerns.

Hispo the near, or Dire, wolf form of the Garou.

Homid a Garou of human ancestry.

Impergium the 3000 years following the birth of agriculture, when strict population controls were enforced on humans.

Incarna a major form of spirit, powerful.

Jaggling a spirit servant of an Incarna or Celestine.

Kenning emphatic calling used when howling.

Klaive a fetish dagger or sword, usually made of silver, often enchanted.

Litany the Garou code of laws.

Lupus a Garou of wolf origin.

Membrane, The the barrier between the Near and Deep Umbras, breached at an Anchorhead, or via the Dream Zone.

Metis the sterile and often deformed offspring of two Garou.

Moon Bridge a gate between two caerns, formed most often during a moot.

Moon-Calf idiot, simpleton.

Moot a sept or tribal conclave that takes place at a caern.

Mule slang for metis.

Near Umbra the spirit world surrounding the Gaia Realm.

Pack a small group of Garou bound to each other by friendship.

Penumbra Earth's Shadow, the spirit world directly surrounding the physical world many, but not all, terrain features will be the same.

Protectorate the territory claimed and patrolled by a sept or pack.

Reaching travelling into the spirit world.

Realms the worlds of 'solid' reality within the Tellurian.

Ronin a Garou who, for whatever reason, is not part of Garou society.

Sept a group of Garou who live near and tend a caern.

Tellurian the whole of reality.

Totem a spirit joined to a pack or tribe and representative of its inner nature.

A tribal totem is an Incarna, a pack totem is an Incarna avatar.

Triat, The the Weaver, the Wyld and the Wyrm.

Tribe the larger community of Garou.

Umbra the spirit world.

Veil, The see Delirium.

Ways, The the traditions of the Garou.

Weaver, The manifestation of order and pattern, such as technology, computers, science and mathematics.

Wyld, The manifestation of pure change, transmutation and elemental force.

Wyrm, The manifestation of evil and decay, in Garou mythology. Vampires, toxic waste and pollution are examples of its work.

Wyrmhole a place spiritually defiled by the Wyrm, a location of great corruption.
 

Vulgar Argot
Ape slang for human or homid.

Cadaver derogatory term for a vampire.

Flock, The all of humanity.

Gremlin a malevolent spirit.

Leech see Cadaver.

Run a ritual hunt or revel at the end of a moot.

Sheep humans.

Steeping Sideways entering the spirit world. Elders do not like this usage....

Adren a pupil or student who learns from a master.

Airts the magical paths within the spirit world.

Aisling a journey into the spirit world.

Anamae 'soul-friend', a bond with a pack totem.

Anruth a Garou who travels from caern to caern but is bound to none.

Athro teacher, mentor.

Awen the sacred Muse, the creative impulse.

Brugh a mystic place of any sort.

Charach a Garou who sleeps with another Garou.

Chiminage a (payment) request by a sept made to any Garou who uses their caern.

Cliath a young Garou, not yet of standing rank.

Fomori humans who have turned to the Wyrm.

Fostern your pack brothers and sisters.

Gallain human Kinfolk of the Garou.

Harano inexplicable gloom, depression.

-ikthya 'of the Wyrm'.

Inceptor a Garou who guides another through a rite. A Ritemaster.

Kinain the relationship of Garou by blood (never includes metis).

Pericarp the Near Umbra around each Realm.

Phoebe an Incarna of Luna, representing the Moon.

Praenomen the guardian spirit of a pack.

-rhya 'greater in station'. Appended to a name.

Urrah Garou who live in the cities, 'tainted ones'.

-yuf 'honoured equal', appended to a name.

Mages
 
Acolyte a non-Awakened servitor of a mage.

Arete a mage's magickal enlightenment and will.

Ascension War, The a mage conflict to determine the nature of reality.

Arcane a mystical veil erected by mages to hide their identity.

Avatar a soul who originally inhabited the Tellurian, an Awakened Avatar allows a mage to perform magick.

Awakened, The True Mages, and supernatural creatures.

Awakening, The when one realises the reality of magick and one's destiny.

Branding a punishment which marks an Avatar.

Cabal a group of mages bound to each other by friendship and purpose.

Caern a Node controlled by Werewolves.

Censure a mild punishment amongst mages.

Chantry a stronghold of a mage or Cabal. Technomancers call them Constructs, Nephandi call them Labyrinths.

Coincidental Magick magick performed in a fashion so as to appear like a mundane event.

Convention one of the five groups of the Technocracy - Iteration X, the Syndicate, the Progenitors, the New World Order, the Void Engineers.

Council aka the Council of Nine, the federation of the Nine Mystic Traditions. The Technocracy equivalent is the Union.

Craft mystic societies which take no part in the Ascension War.

Custos a non-mage who works for a cabal.

Deep Umbra (Technocracy: Deep Universe). The Umbra beyond the Horizon.

Demon beings of evil intent and disputed origin.

Dream Realm worlds created out of old dreams, also called Maya.

Dynamic Reality reality in flux.

Epiphany a magickal revelation.

Familiar a spirit in flesh form.

Focus an object, belief or gesture required to perform magick.

Gaia the Earth-Mother.

Gate a temporary magickal bridge between locations.

Gauntlet, The a mystical barrier between Earth and the Near Umbra.

Gilgul the destruction of a mage's Avatar, the ultimate punishment.

Hedge Magician one who uses static magick to affect reality.

Hollow Ones a group which embraces post-modern decay and Gothic romanticism.

Horizon, The the magickal barrier separating the Near and Deep Umbras.

Horizon Realms small pockets of custom-made reality.

Hubris overwhelming (often fatal) pride.

Incarna servants of the Celestines.

Initiation a test/ceremony which marks the transition from apprentice to mage.

Mage, True Mage an Awakened person. Also willworker, magi, mystic.

Magic stage tricks, illusions, static magic.

Magick, True Magick dynamically altering reality through will.

Marauder a magickal psychotic.

Metaphysic Trinity Stasis, Dynamism and Entropy - also the Weaver, Wyld and Wyrm.

Methodology a subgroup of a Technocratic convention.

Mystick things involving the forces of True Magick.

Near Umbra the spirit world around each Realm.

Nephandus (pl. Nephandi) a mage who chooses darkness over light, frequently deals with demons.

Node a highly mystickal place, they store Quintessence, and have a thin Gauntlet.

Oracle a legendary mage who has achieved mystickal perfection.

Orphans Sleepers who Awakened spontaneously.

Ostracism a punishment divorcing a mage from mage society.

Otherworlds realms outside the Gauntlet.

Paradox an anomalous state of reality caused when a mage disrupts the momentum of reality with her own magickal arts.

Paradox Realm a small realm created by Paradox spirits to entrap a mage.

Paradox Spirit a spirit formed from the collective beliefs of humanity.

Path a mage's chosen destiny.

Pattern the mystical composition of an object, entity, place or idea.

Procedures Technocracy mages' magical effects.

Pure Ones the legendary primordial beings of the Tellurian.

Pogrom, The the purge of opposition by the Technocracy.

Portal a permanent Gate.

Prime the original unified force composing the Universe.

Protocols, The the Traditions' code of honour.

Quiet a state of insanity caused by the excessive use of magick.

Quintessence the raw stuff of magick.

Realms the worlds of solid 'reality' within the Tellurian.

Resonance mystick traces left by magick use.

Rote a tried and true magickal effect.

Seeking a quest for enlightenment.

Shade Realm the Umbral 'shadow' of a Shard Realm.

Shard Realm one of nine realms said to once have been part of Gaia.

Sleeper a person potentially capable of magick.

Sphere a particular element of reality manipulated by mages.
