There is no turning back. {We open inside Xavier's Mansion. It is late at night. Those who {are here have gone to sleep for the night. All is quiet. All is calm. {Outside a storm rages, thunder and lightning light up the night. {Inside the mansion is dark, lighted only by the shadows cast from {the lightning. Inside the mansion is silent, the only noise coming {from the ticking of the clock -- TICK TOCK TICK TOCK.} {Jean and Cain walk quietly through the large entry hall of the mansion. {Neither says anything. They approach Xavier's study, Jean knocks on {the closed door lightly.} Jean: Charles...? Charles...? Professor are you in there? Cain: I don't like this, Red. We shouldn't be doing this. We should get the others. Jean: No! I can't believe it's true. There has to be some sort of explanation. {There is no answer from inside. Jean turns the knob and Jean and {Cain enter the room silently. Inside the fireplace, a warm fire gently {emanates. With the back of the chair facing Jean and Cain, Jean can {almost make out the hand resting on the arm of the chair. As the fire {crackles, Jean and Cain take hesitant steps to the chair. Each step {bringing them one step closer to the chair, deeper into the room, and {one step further away from the door... the only way out.} Jean: Professor? Ch-Charles...? Are you awake? Are you allright? {Suddenly, red energy begins to emanate from Professor Charles Xavier, {as he rises to his feet -- yes, he's standing. He is wearing an all-black {uniform. His expression is the epitome of evil. Smiling, leering at Jean, {he steps toward the fire.} Xavier: I'm sorry, Jean. Did you say something? I thought I heard you say something. I thought you said, the Z'Nox chamber was the most heavily fortified psi-protected room on the planet... and that not even the most powerful telepath could hear you. Is that what you said? That's funny, because I did hear you. I must be quite powerful... Don't you think? It's quite ironic... while all my children slept each night... warm and snug in your beds that I provided, I was right beneath you plotting all your deaths. Quite chilling, wouldn't you say, Jean? How well do you think you'll sleep, tonight? {Jean's knees go weak, she is trembling with an inhuman terror.} Jean: The Z'Nox chamber... Th-they ve been here all the time.... {Panel focuses on Xavier's face, his smile. He is alone in view.} Xavier: I thought it fitting. Were once I used my power to briefly harness the collective compassion of the people of the world... Now I will attempt something... more long term. {Xavier takes a step forward, and for an instant, reality warps as {he momentarily steps onto, then off of, the Astral Plane -- effect {to match Jean's crossing over in X-Men #53 --, then when he {completes his step, he is in full armor; Onslaught. Full page {panel. Lightning striking behind him.} Xavier: And by the way, Jean. Yes... I am Onslaught. {Jean begins to step back, her expression is terror, she is being {fed by Onslaught's psionic terror.} Jean: Ca-Cain... run... Run! {Panel focuses on Juggernaut, who corrals Jean in the direction {of the door.} Juggernaut: No. I'll hold him off. You go. Warn the others... and get help. Onslaught: Child, don't leave. You are merely prolonging the inevitable. {As Jean scrambles out of the Professor's study, Cain Marko attaches {his helmet and stands his ground, blocking the door.} Narrative: As Cain Marko dons his helmet for a final time he thinks to himself; So much of my life wasted, I will not waste my death. {Amid the brewing psionic storm in the room, fully armored, Juggernaut {raises his arm and points his finger at Onslaught and shouts.} Juggernaut: You owe me a rematch, Charlie! Onslaught: Bring it on. {Panel switches to Jean running frantically toward the entry hall of {Xavier's mansion, she tries to send out a telepathic distress call, {but finds her powers negated. She screams instead. Sounds of the {battle, Cain's screams -- ARRRRRRRGGGHHHH!!!!! -- can be heard {throughout the mansion.} Jean: Hank!!!! Bobby!!!! Ororo!!! Hurry!!!! Hurry!!! {Panel switches to the upstairs hallway, Bobby and Hank and Sam {all get out of bed, woken from their sound sleep, rushing to their {doors, panicked, the kind when you ve just woken up in an unfamiliar {place from a nightmare. Panel focuses on Bobby and Hank running {from one end of the hallway toward the staircase.} Iceman: Did you hear that Hank?! Sounds like Jean's in trouble! Come on! {The Dark Beast smiles, and follows.} Dark Beast: Lead the way, my chilled friend! {Sam turns on his kinetic charge and begins flying down from the {other end of the hallway.} Cannonball: Ah'm comin' Ms. Grey! {As they are running, The Dark Beast grabs Bobby -- still in human {form -- from behind and begins pushing him faster and faster toward {the staircase. Bobby, stunned, turns his head around unsure of what {is going on} Iceman: Hank, what are you doing?! {Ororo runs down the top stairs from her attic, mouth agape at {what is happening.} {They near the staircase. Dark Beast tightens his grip and smiles.} Dark Beast: What my counter-part should have done a long time ago. Storm: Goddess, No!!! {The Dark Beast throws Bobby, through the wooden banister railing {which breaks against Bobby's human body -- KRACK! -- Bobby is {thrown directly into the chandelier which he then crashes into and {shatters -- KRASH!!! --, both Bobby and the chandelier fall to the {ground -- KRASH!! --, the momentum carrying Bobby to the front {door, where he hits back first -- KRACK! -- and falls unconscious {at the feet of Jean Grey. The entire series of panels is done with {an almost slow motion effect, as Jean, Sam, Ororo, and Bobby {are all seen reacting to what is happening.} Jean: Bobby!!! {The Dark Beast stands atop the railing.} Dark Beast: Idiot. {Sam has the Dark Beast in sight.} Cannonball: Whoever ya are, Mister, ah'm gonna take ya down! Dark Beast: Really? {Inches before ramming into the Dark Beast, Sam runs into an {invisible brick wall and comes to an abrupt and violent stop, {then ricochets off into the hallway -- KAPOOOW!!!.} Post: Cloaking disengaged. {Post stands before the fallen Cannonball, towering over him.} Post: Samuel Guthrie. I've waited a long time to meet you. {Post reels his fist back, Sam looks up, staring blankly.} Cannonball: Ah no-- {Post hammers Cannonball -- WHAM!!! -- Cannonball is sent {flying across the hallway, ramming into the walls, unprotected {by his kinetic blast, pictures falling down, plaster chunks taken {out.} {Storm is in the air, firing lightning bolts at Post and Dark Beast, {trying to get to the entry way for more maneuverability.} Storm: You are Onslaught's Herald, Post!!! How did you enter the mansion undected?!?! Post: Our Professor let us in, Ororo. Tonight... the glory begins. Tonight, the Onslaught will be unleashed!!! {Holocaust steps from an empty room, from behind her and shouts {to her, while firing his nuclear energy blasts -- PHOOM!!! PHOOM!!! {PHOOM!!! As Post fires his own weapons systems at her, Storm {is caught in a cross-fire in the narrow hall-way, firing her lightning {bolts in both directions, giving the effect of electrical currents running {up and down the hallway, exploding through the walls.} Holocaust: Mutant! Submit to the will of Onslaught! Storm: Never! {The Dark Beast leaps over the railing and heads straight for Jean.} Jean: Hank! What's the matter with you?! {The Dark Beast leaps at Jean.} Dark Beast: Nothing a little murder and mayhem won't cure, Red! {Jean steadies herself. Just as the Dark Beast is about to strike Jean, {Scott's optic blast -- ZAKT!!! -- knocks the evil McCoy out.} {Cyclops runs up the stairs from beneath the mansion, in full uniform. {He sees Jean beside a huge china cabinet. He looks around stunned {at the fight, and cries out to Jean.} Cyclops: Jean!!! What's happening?!? Jean: Scott!!! It's The Professor!!! We're under attack!!! My power's negated!!! Cyclops: You're no good to us without your powers!!! Send out a distress signal!!! Call for help, Jean, NOW!!! {Jean turns and runs toward the comm. room.} Storm: Scott, behind you!!! {The Blob takes hold of Cyclops from around the corner.} Blob: Ha! Ha! Caught ya nappin' one-eye! Cyclops: Blob! How?! {Blob takes Cyclops and while resisting his laser blast -- ZAKT!!! -- {throws Scott against the china cabinet violently -- KRASH!!! -- {dishes breaking against the ground, Post follows that by firing {his weapon systems from the second floor, beside the broken {railing down at Cyclops -- KABOOM!!! -- who is buried under {debris.} {Suddenly The Juggernaut explodes from Xavier's study -- {KRAKOOM!!! -- His helmet ripped off, thrown violently through the {door by Onslaught. Juggernaut crashes against the wall near the {entry way -- KRASH!!! -- while Onslaught steps from the study, {untouched.} {Just as Storm is about to reach the entry way, The Mimic, flying {above the fallen chandelier, uses her powers to cause gale force {winds to hurl her into the path of one of Holocaust's nuclear blasts.} Mimic: Love your power, Storm. {-- PHOOM!!! -- The explosion takes out a section of the hallway -- {KABOOM!!!, and hurls Storm across the stairs, where she is {then sprawled out unconscious.} {Jean turns around, running, sees her fallen husband and teammates.} Jean's thought's: Oh, God. Bobby, Ororo... Scott! This can't be happening! After all this time, how?! We've been betrayed! Betrayed by one of our own! {The dust settles. A wide panel of the entry way of Xavier's mansion {smoking, debris, and the fallen X-Men.Onslaught takes the disoriented {Scott by the arm. Post calls out to him.} Post: My lord, Jean Grey fled. Should I return her to you? Onslaught: No, Post. Leave her to me. Prepare Logan. We leave the mansion within the hour. Now my first student and I are going to have one last lesson. {Onslaught merges with the Astral Plane and rises up to Ororo's {attic with Scott held in one-hand loose like a rag-doll. They arrive {in Storm's plant filled attic. It is dark, rain is falling hard against {the glass skylight, lightning lighting up the room from overhead. {Onslaught throws Scott into the center of the room. Scott falls {down as he is on the verge of loosing consciousness.} {Onslaught unleashes a painful psi-bolt that jolts Scott awake.} Onslaught: Oh, no Scott. I'm not going to let you go into shock now. How many times did you come to me in the middle of the night with your pitiful worries? You will listen to me! You will stay conscious! {Scott, writhes on the floor.} Cyclops: What... do... you... want? Onslaught: Why, I want your attention, dear boy! I want you to know. I want you to know everything. I am here now because of you. All my life Scott, I have had to control myself... to control my evil-self. All my fears, all my passions, all my prejudices, all my rage, all my hate... All locked away. Buried in my subconscious. All because I knew the terrible cost were I to let those emotions out, Scott. All my sin and anger, repressed and denied for a lifetime. Denied Scott, but not forgotten. Those black emotions lived inside my mind... my all-powerful mutant mind. And with each trauma... with each stress they grew stronger. They took on a life of their own. My nightmares lived on the Astral Plane. The saint that I was, I tried to fight them... to control them. To deny my desire... my need for power. My mental controls weakened, once I let them out for only the briefest of time, and I swore, Scott that I would never let them out again. [9] But you kept failing! You and the rest of the X-Men kept failing! Fighting a loosing battle! Crippled by impotence and indecisiveness! When I returned to Earth and saw the wasteland that you had turned my dream into, I knew I could not... I would not hold back any longer. [10] I knew that the time had come for me to release my true power! A power mine by birth and right! My evil side had grown so strong it would not abide the Astral Plane anymore. It wanted freedom! The freedom of reality! And it had grown strong enough to make its desire real. It crossed over the Astral Plane, Scott! Do you realize the power it takes to do that?! My nightmare had come to life! And now I see it all so clearly. There need be no more division... no more strife. The Astral Plane and reality, Scott. Homo Sapien and Homo Superior. I will do to this planet what my darkness did to me! I will tear asunder the Astral Plane! I will unleash it upon reality and unite the two! Once unleashed, the Onslaught cannot be abated! Just as I have the power to shape The Astral Plane to my desires... so will I do the same to reality! I will have all power! Total control! The guilty will be punished! Man and mutant will be united! My dream at last come true! All control over the thoughts of every living creature on this planet! A world recreated in my image! One consciousness... MINE!!!! {Scott stumbles forward, crawling.} Cyclops: You're... insane. Professor Xavier... will stop you... he'll stop you. {Onslaught approaches Scott.} Onslaught: You fool. {Onslaught opens his hand above Scott's head, psionic energy emanating. {Scott begins to cry out in agony as Onslaught burns Scott's optic nerves, {blood running from his eyes and ears -- AAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!.} Onslaught: Blind as always, Scott... Always blind to the truth. Cyclops: I-I can't see! I can't see! Onslaught: Yes, Scott. Now you are truly blind. No matter how strong my evil side grew it could not have taken over unless I allowed it to. Unless I embraced it. Don't you see, Scott? I am Xavier!!!!! {Onslaught turns his back to Cyclops.} Onslaught: I have already tested my power when I merged The Astral Plane with my birth-place in the desert. [11] Now I will do the same to the entire planet. I have always had the power to make my dream reality... always too controled and ethical to do it. No longer, Scott. I will not be stopped. It is the only way... Those minds too consumed with hatred shall be extinguished... Here... tonight, I will pass judgment on a world. {Cyclops, writhes on the floor trying to fight the nightmarish visions {being flooded into his mind.} Onslaught: Good-bye, Scott. I seek a mate, and I have chosen Jean. Your wife... and unborn child... will join with me... join with the glory that is Onslaught. {Onslaught slips onto the Astral Plane and disappears through the {floor. Scott begins to scream out and fire his optic blasts wildly, {blindly, destroying Ororo's attic.} Cyclops: NOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! {The panel shifts to the comm. room, Jean is sending her Traitor {transmission.} Jean: Alex?! Kurt? Sean? Cable... Anyone?! I don't even know if this transmission is being received. If anyone can hear me, we were attacked within the mansion! We were taken totally unaware! Both teams -- Blue and Gold -- have been decimated! Mansion security was deactivated from within! We've been betrayed, Sean, by one of our own! Professor Xavier has gone insane! Nathan, if you can hear me... Charles Xavier is Onslaught! Cain Marko sacrificed his life... he was the first to die. Nathan, your father... I can't feel him or anyone else anymore. I'm the only one left standing and Charles has seen to it that my power's negated. It's our own fault really... after what I saw in his mind. I should never have trusted him. We knew so little about his past... {The comm. room wall exlpodes -- BRBAM!!! -- She turns to Onslaught {who materializes near her, releasing his psionic energy and consuming {Jean onto the Astral Plane. Jean gives out a final cry of defiance.} Jean: You?! You may have killed the X-Men!!! Your X-Men!!!! But the dream will never --!!!! {The panel focuses on Onslaught reaching for Jean, Xavier's features {can be seen glowing through the armor.} Onslaught: Die? Of course it won't. All my dreams... and all your nightmares are about to come true. I offered you a choice... a place by my side as my consort. [12] This time I offer no such choice. Now, at last, as I always planned. Jean Grey... you are mine! {Final panel focuses on the medi-lab. Inside Logan is still in his {life-support tube. The panel focuses on his face, then his eyes, {which suddenly open wide.} 6. Narrative: Fall's Edge, Virginia. Headquarters' of the government sanctioned mutant task force known as X-Factor. {We open with a panel of Forge lying down on his back, his head {underneath a control console while he does repairs.} {Suddenly the screen above the console receives the distress signal. {Jean's face appears on the screen, her voice can be heard. When {the message plays, Forge hits his head under the console as he {rushes to view the transmission. For the first time, the reader sees {the transmission in wide panel, with Forge standing before it.} Jean's voice: Alex?!... BZZT... Cable... Anyone?!... BZZT... Don't even know... BZZT... transmission being received?...BZZT... Taken total... BZZT... Taken totally unaware! Both teams... BZZT... and ... BZZT... decimated! Mansion security was deactivated... BZZT... Activated... Activated... deactivated from within!... BZZT... Betrayed by one of our own!... BZZT... Professor Xavier... BZZT... was the first to die. Only one left... BZZT... Power's negated... BZZT... Our own fault really... BZZT... Should never have trusted... BZZT... Knew so little about... BZZT... You?!... BZZT... may have killed the X-Men... BZZT... But the dream will never...! Off-Panel voice: Die? {The message suddenly stops -- BRRRZRATZ!!!! -- as Jean disappears {into the psionic energy. Panel focuses on Forge, with a stunned {expression on his face.} Narrative: He is known only as Forge. A mutant with the ability to repair or invent, literally anything... Jaded by war and a life filled with heartbreak, there are few people he genuinely cares about... Forge: Ororo. Narrative: Ororo Monroe; Storm of the X-Men, and someone who lives at Xavier's mansion... is one of them. {Forge turns around and begins running, frantically putting his shirt {on, toward Sabretooth's holding cell, while sending a message to {the rest of his teammates over his comm.} Forge: Lorna! Raven! This is Forge! Something terrible has happened at Xavier's mansion! Rendezvous with me --. {Suddenly Forge is cut off mid sentence. He stops outside of {Sabretooth's cell to listen.} Comm. Voice: Transmission relay denied. Message not heard. Forge: What?! {A new voice can be heard over the comm.} Voice: You heard right, Forge. The rest of X-Factor are on an important mission on the west coast and are unavailable for your personal business. Forge: But, sir! My friends are in dange -- !!! Voice: You heard me, Forge. And if you are thinking of going there on your own or taking anything or anyone belonging to X-Factor with you, you can consider that your formal resignation, and you will be brought up on charges of treason. Need I remind you, you work for the United States government. X-Factor is not some toy to be played with. It belongs to me. Do not cross me, Forge. You will be sorry. {Forge stands for a moment. There is no decision to make. He turns {into Sabrtooth's holding cell and asks.} Forge: Sabretoo -- Victor, I have to ask you for help. I -- {The panel turns to Sabretooth, who interrupts Forge, while standing {ready, already in full uniform.} Sabretooth: What are we waiting for? {The panel turns to the other end of the comm., to Bastion, who {immediately contacts Gyrich. We can see Henry Peter Gyrich on {the other end, talking on a cellular phone while hiding off in a corner {of The White House.} Bastion: Everything is proceeding beautifully, Mr. Gyrich. I want you to initiate the next phase. You know what to do. I'm going to give the order... Operation: Zero Tolerance is now in effect. Henry Peter Gyrich: Yes, sir. {Bastion clicks off his comm. Then stands up, his face fully seen for {the first time. He presses a button on his desk.} Bastion: Behold, I show you a mystery. We shall not all sleep but we shall all be changed in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye at the last trumpet; For the trumpet shall sound and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
